Definition of BLOG?

It's been brought to my attention that some of you out there in blog land thinks I am a Diva! Of course we would have to know what the slang definition of Diva was before we could figure out what they were talking about! They think my blog is all about me, that I am self promoting! Well to start with, I thought that's what a blog was, a personal account of things that were going on in our life. Sorta like a public diary! Maybe I have the wrong concept of what a blog is supposed to be! Would anyone like to enlighten me? The second thing is, I would love to have things to blog about like my sweet friend Theresa at Garden Antiques, but there aren't any interesting shops in my part of the woods to promote. So if I can't write about myself, what else is there to write about? Does anyone have the real definition of BLOG?

I have never thought of my self as a Diva! I'm just a country girl that was fortunate enough to get a few breaks in my favor! But I am curious to know what you guys think!

Theresa

what's wrong with self promoting? this is your blog, and you can do with it whatever you want ! perhaps the upity ones are jealous? but really, who cares? if people have a problem, it is *their* problem, not yours :)
i can't remember how i ended up here, but I love it - thrifting/junking is slim pickins here in (western NY)the winter time... i sure wish i were closer because I really want that green chair in your new display !!
keep doing what your doing :)

Girl, you either got some real haters out there or some really really jealous people, but my goodness enough is enough!! If they don't like what you have to write about and say, they can move on down the road!! A blog is an online journal, be it about yourself, your travels, your family or whatever you feel like writing about at that moment. Take that Diva crown and wear it proudly and remember you aren't going to please everyone all the time, as long as you are happy, WHO CARES!! I myself love your style, your writing, and your friendship. So there...

Well I looked and I didn't find a book on rules for blogging anywhere except general etiquette ones so I guess your critic needs to get their rear end in high gear and write one, so we can all correct our mistakes to fit her(and I'm sure it's a her) ideals of blogging or Oh my gosh, you might lose her as a reader. Heaven forbid. Puh-lease! With all the magazines going under, thank goodness there are places to visit like your blog for inspirations. Besides if she doesn't like it, why does she keep lurking? I say you can be the diva 'cause I want to be queen. Deal? Tn'T

I'm with you on the definition of blog. For me it's my personal online diary about some of the things I like and some of the things I'm doing. If I had a business, I would be using it to self-promote, and maybe even sell things, like so many people do. So really, a blog can be anything you want it to be, pretty much. And, I think it's about having fun. So, if you don't like a blog, don't visit. Second general life/blogland rule: if you don't have anything nice to say...

According to dictionary.com, a blog is "an online diary; a personal chronological log of thoughts published on a Web page". Hmmm. Note the words "diary" and "personal". Why wouldn't your blog be about you and your thoughts? However, I just reviewed some of your posts and I don't find any that are very personal. Seems you are always hightlighting someone else! Here is my advice...be yourself and say to heck with those who criticize!

I guess I'm confused.. I'm not sure how I originally found your blog.. I personally am so glad I did. Your loving caring spirit shows with each post you make. I too have a shop and sometimes post things on here about that.. I post things about my family and our lives. I thought that is what a blog was for.. If someone has a problem reading your blog I suggest they move on.. I truly feel it will be there loss if they don't stay and enjoy it with the rest of us.. I hope you continue doing what you're doing and how you're doing it.. cause girl.. we love it.. your style, your personality and the things you share matter to me.. hugs ~lynne~

Some peoples kids. Of course your blog is going to be about You! Duh! If not then shouldn't I be doing Debs @ Talkin' Trash blog for her and she should do my blog for me? That makes NO sense. I for one plan on blogging about my junkin' business and whatever else I want. Please keep blogging about you , showing us pictures of your shows , your mall space and your home. Thats why I read your blog. Sue

Well for Pete's sake! I was just getting into this blogging and thought it was supposed to be about sharing our lives and interests! How silly of me! Really Theresa, I love you blog, what you share, your neat pictures... I am sorry for whoever has a different opinion. I personally feel they need to keep it to themselves and move on! Don't take personal offense from it, just keep doing what you are doing! Blessings, carrell

Let's see, a blog is a "web log" which is like a online journal...and the word was shortened to "blog". A journal is usually a documentation of what happens in your own life so I would say it is totally EXPECTED for you to talk about you, your personal experiences and creations on your blog ~ So don't you worry at all Theresa, I love hearing what you're up to, seeing your arrangements of beautiful things and also getting a peek at the shows you're in because I can't be there. Thanks so much for sharing your life!!! Don't let one person's negative attitude get you down, we're all so happy that you're here! xxoo, Dawn

It is your blog - write about and post pictures about what you want (as long as it is legal) :-). People need to understand - It is like television - if you don't like the program, change the channel, cause you have control of the remote control!. Keep up the good work.

From Wikipedia:
A blog (a contraction of the term "Web log") is a Web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

I have a friend who won't read my blog because she considers all blogs to be self-promoting. Whatever.

I consider my blog to be a creative extension of myself.

And I wear the Diva crown with pride.

Hi Theresa,
I have just found your blog from a link at Patti's Delighted Heart.
It's funny that I read your last entry about 'Definition of BLOG'. A group of us Aussie girls had a bit of this going on in the later part of last year. I started my blog after I did an internet search for 'shabby chic' & found a great Aussie web site & off there was her link to her blog, now up until then I had never heard about blogs, only things like Facebook & Myspace. Now the majority of the blogs that I have on my fave list consists mainly of crafty business women who showcase there skills & talents via there blogs which are linked to their websites.
So honey blow your trumpet loud & proud!
I will be adding you to my faves list & will be back frequently to check out what you are up to, drop by my blog if you have time too, I am always up to 'meeting' other wonderful women like yourself.

From one Diva to another, whats wrong with self promotong anyway. If we don't do it for ourselves who is. We are amongst some amazing talented writers, designers and alot of women with alot of heart. I feel I don't have anything to say that anyone would be interested in so I'm always posting pics of my home. I'm sure there are bloggers out there that feel the same about me. Keep doing what your doing...Your GREAT!!!!

I think our blogs are similar. A little about family, a little about our homes, a little about our business. Your blog is diverse and it's inspirational.

Here's the deal. Do you enjoy sharing? Do you get comments that you appreciate? If so, then now. Think of an extremely dirty word and associate it with the person you got this "Diva thing" from. Don't allow folks to knock you down. They shouldn't be given that much power.

Keep doing what you are doing. I like it! And. Look. So do the other people who responded.

Yea! ~Mindy

I guess I will come out of the shadows to say that is the reason I really enjoy reading your blog, to see the wonderful creative things you do. You are very inspiring! If I didn't want to read about you and the things you are doing I would be reading someone elses blog, right?!
Please keep up all the beauty,

I see my Aussie friend found you! Although I've only been writing a blog for 6 weeks I've been reading them for 2 years so that makes me an expert! LOL From all the blogs I've read I've come to the conclusion it is all about YOU! AND you can make it what everever you want to make it...some blogs write whats going on in their family world....some share great magazine home pictures...some share other blogs...some share cool stores ..some share insights from their life... hoping to impact another life! I love all the photos you share..I mean after reading your last post ...I'm getting a truck and heading your way. Oh wait I won't have to cause you will be here in 8 weeks! I love ALL that's in your booth. How can you part with it? It all would look fantastic in your house (and my house)! Oh and thanks for the sweet comments you left about my photos! What a complement coming from a professional like yourself!
Can't wait to meet you in March!
Blessings!

I don't think that you are self promoting! I think that you share your life and your ideas which in my opinion is the purpose of the blog! Don't change a thing! You're great!

I think you are a very humble person and that you share what is on your mind or heart. I would not worry about what others say, they may just be envious or just plain old mean. They can just choose to read some other blogs or go away. I think the birthday party was a wonderful thing to do for your friend. I am sure she was deeply touched by your generosity!

Oh Whatever. It's not like people have to READ if they don't want to. Good grief. I see blogs as fitting several purposes- diaries, communication with others outside of Facebook ( I mean, really, at my age? Facebook?), networking, SELF-PROMOTING and a source of information for supplies, ideas, hobbies, places to visit, great shops, trends, etc.

So, if I don't read Remote Controlled Airplanes Are My Life blog, it is because I am not interested. I would advise the same.

I agree with Sharon. Petty jealous people often call names because they have nothing else to do. Al esson we taught in middle school was "Tearing others down does not build you up."

I love ya anyway!

Anita

Theresa, you can't let anyone get you down. You have so much talent that you are going to meet lots of people who are jealous of your ability and your success. A blog is the perfect place to toot your own horn, and you're a business women, if you don't promote your business who else is supposed to?

As far as the diva thing goes, that is soooo untrue-you have been supportive and kind and eager to lend a hand or offer advice to me-a business newbie-diva's don't do that. Diva's do just for themselves. You just gave an 80 yr old her first birthday party! Diva's don't do that either! The internet is a great thing, but it also attracts freaks and nutcases-you gotta let 'em drown in their own nastiness. KEEP ON DOING YOUR WONDERFUL THING THERESA!!

I am confused, I thought a blog was exactly that, a personal account of your life, family, adventures, endeavors, interests, etc.! Who makes the rules? No one is forced to read it, only the people who enjoy it (like I do...)should continue to lurk around... And what is wrong with self promotion, if that is what you wanted to do? What's wrong with people?!!

Well...I for one love being a "diva" and darlin'....I believe that all us "yaya's" should be divas. Because, someone needs to tell your reader that made that rude comment...that doesn't she know that "it is all about us"? :)

Honey...don't give it any thought. You write whatever you please and if someone doesn't want to read it...then why does she keep visiting? How would she know what you write about, unless she visits all the time? :)

As the saying goes....you ain't accomplishing anything if nobody is talkin' about ya!

Theresa,

Hope this isn't too late to comment, but i just found your wonderful site.

Diva: I thought that meant someone who excelled in what they do. Guess i didn't know what the definition really was. But if you can choose a definition, i think excelling in what you do what be perfect, just from what little i have seen of your blog.
I certainly did not see anything that sounded like bragging or whatever the 'other' person said.

My understanding of a blog, was that you could put whatever you wanted on it. I love that you share pics of displays. They are beautiful.
And, as a new little shop owner here in Oregon, your pics give wonderful ideas that help those with businesses, or want to make their homes more lovely.

Also love little looks at weather, and whatever else you decide to post.

Blessings as you continue on, just the way you are.
